A Woman’s Right to Equal Pay
Throughout history and across the globe, women have been unfairly compensated for the work that they perform. Even within the past century, men have often been paid a higher wage than women for the same work, often with the assumption that women’s work is somehow less valuable than men’s even when the working conditions and end product are the same. In an attempt to eliminate this disparity, the Equal Pay Act was passed in 1963 as an amendment to the Fair Labor Standard Act (FLSA).
Equal Pay Act
The Equal Pay Act (EPA) made it illegal in the United States to pay women a lower wage than men for equal jobs performed under similar working conditions. For instance, if a company pays a female supervisor less than a male supervisor who has the same duties, the company is in violation of the EPA. Unfortunately, passage of the EPA has not entirely stopped unequal pay between the sexes, and some companies still violate the EPA by paying women on a different salary scale than men.
