Dangerous Weather
Weather can cause a significant number of injuries, especially to workers who have to be in dangerous situations to perform their jobs. There are millions of storms each year in the United States, and in addition to those relatively infrequent occurrences, many climates pose a danger to the health of workers in certain areas of the country.
Some of the most common aspects of weather that can pose a threat to workers’ health are:
- Thunderstorms
- Lightning
- Tornadoes
- Hurricanes
- Flooding
- Extreme cold
- Extreme heat
Many workers who perform their jobs in the outdoors are in significant danger on a regular basis from various weather situations. They could be struck by lightning, unable to move their vehicles because of flooding, or caught up in the obvious dangers that hurricanes and tornadoes bring with them. High winds could cause them to lose work materials and put them at risk for being struck by falling or broken objects, like trees, that are being carried by the wind.
Employees who work outdoors can also be in danger from extreme heat or cold that occurs in many areas of the country on a regular basis. It is important that the employer make the environment as safe as possible. This can mean various things; sometimes, the employer will provide extra safety equipment, or may have to suspend work during bad weather.
