Senate passes bill to further extend protection on whistleblower nurses
The Senate has just passed a bill that will help further protect nurses in whistleblower situations after two nurses in Winkler County lost their jobs and faced criminal charges for reporting a doctor that was giving substandard care.
The incident began after the two nurses reported the doctor to the Texas Medical Board. The doctor then found out that the board was investigating anonymous claims and told the sheriff.
The sheriff then held an investigation to determine who made the claims. They were then found and faced criminal charges as a result of the complaints. The board the cited the doctor withe multiple charges including improper treatment in an emergency room.
The bill that was passed last week was done so that this situation would not happen again. There will now be a $25,000 imposed a license holder who attempts to retaliate against nurses.
