Texas company accused of exploiting employees
A Texas company has been involved in a complaint that began when they were accused of exploiting mentally disabled employees that were working at a plant in Iowa.
The company, Hill Country Farms, has now agreed to follow all record-keeping laws, pay minimum wage and follow overtime rules. The president of the company was ordered to pay $1.76 million in back wages to 31 disabled men after they violated the labor laws.
It was also alleged that nondisabled workers, such as supervisors and chief crews, worked with the disabled workers and were not paid for time worked. Due to the poor record keeping, there is no way of knowing how much overtime they worked.
