History of the Texas Board of Legal Specialization
The Texas Board of Legal Specialization began in 1974 with the authorization of the Texas Supreme Court. Although there are over 70,000 practicing attorneys in the state of Texas, the Texas Board of Legal Specialization retains the right to certify attorneys in special areas of the law such as labor and employment law. Rather than honoring attorneys who have surface knowledge of all kinds of law, the TBLS awards certifications to attorneys who have become well-versed in one or two specific areas. There are 21 areas of the law that the TBLS addresses, and the TBLS has awarded over 8,000 Certificates of Special Competence since its inception.

How the TBLS Certifies Attorneys
The TBLS considers its certification process quite strict, which is why only a fraction of the practicing lawyers in Texas are board-certified. The TBLS takes the following into consideration when awarding certification:
- Length of experience in a specific area of the law
- Educational requirements
- References
- Final, day-long examination
Because the TBLS is very selective, you know that its certified lawyers are truly adept in their fields.
